Osteomyelitis is an inflammation of bone caused by an infecting organism.
It may remain localized, or it may spread through the bone to involve the marrow, cortex, periosteum, and soft tissue surrounding the bone.
In the early 1900s about 20% of patient with osteomyelities died, and those who survived suffered significant morbidity. currently, morbidity and mortality from osteomyelities are relatively low because of modern treatment method, including the use of antibiotic and aggressive surgical treatment.
Nevertheless, osteomyelitis is still extremely difficult to treat effectively.
