The diagnosis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) requires all of the following
Demonstration of hepatic steatosis by imaging or biopsy
Exclusion of significant alcohol consumption
Exclusion of other causes of hepatic steatosis
Laboratory tests, such as the serum aminotransferase and ferritin levels, are often abnormal in NAFLD.
However, these abnormalities are neither required nor sufficient for making the diagnosis, as laboratory tests may be normal in patients with NAFLD .
